Rubbish crash causes Auckland chaos

10:30 pm on 10 November 2014

Drivers were forced to do U-turns and head the wrong way off on-ramps today after a fatal rubbish truck crash on Auckland's South Western motorway.

Inspector William Taylor said the driver died today after his truck rolled several times on State Highway 20 between the Dominion Road on-ramp and the Hillsborough Road off-ramp.

The motorway was initially closed in both directions, and motorists were seen doing U-turns and driving the wrong way down on-ramps to get around the wreckage. The road reopened again fully late tonight.

Mr Taylor said the clean-up was extensive.

Drivers were urged to delay their travel or seek alternative routes, and those heading to Auckland Airport needed to be especially aware of extended travel times.

The Serious Crash Unit and the Commercial Vehicle Investigation Unit are investigating.
