City councillor reopens legal fight

A Dunedin city councillor has reopened a four-year road dispute with his own council by threatening to sue it for $1 million in damages.

Doug Hall, who owns Hall Brothers Transport, was elected to the council last year.

Three days ago, it appeared that Dunedin's State Highway 88 debacle was over, when Mr Hall sold his city yard to the brewery Emersons for a new headquarters.

But Mr Hall today said his lawyers were approaching the council about a compensation package for legal and other costs.

In 2012, the High Court fined the council $185,000 for mistakes it made shifting the state highway past Mr Hall's yard when it built the city's new stadium.

Traffic lights installed nearby on Anzac Avenue in 2011 have never been turned on.
