GeoNet reported the quake was centred 25km west of Murupara, at a depth of 113km.
GeoNet Volcano Network duty seismologist Anna Kaiser said it was felt throughout the North Island and down to the top of the South Island.
However, she did not expect any damage to have occurred to property due to the depth of the quake.
There was a 3.5 quake earlier today south west of Levin at 1.24pm.
