Crown: homeless man lost it with victim

8:05 pm on 29 September 2014

The Crown says petty disagreements caused a homeless man to overreact and fatally attack another homeless man in a central Auckland park.

Steven Harris, 54, died after being stabbed in Myers Park in September last year.

Grenville Henare Fahey, 50, is representing himself and has pleaded not guilty to a charge of murder at the High Court in Auckland.

Crown prosecutor Josh Shaw told the court today that the men had spent time together in the days before Mr Harris was attacked.

CCTV footage shows Mr Fahey and Mr Harris getting free pizzas on Queen Street just after 11pm and an argument then followed.

A short while later, they entered the park and Mr Shaw said it appears that Mr Fahey then "lost it" and started punching and stabbing the unarmed Mr Harris.

The Crown said Mr Fahey then jogged away from the scene, discarded his knife and tried to get rid of his blood-stained clothing.
