Community groups facing financial pressure

3:46 pm on 15 September 2014

A survey has found community organisations are under growing financial pressure.

The poll of 311 providers, conducted by the community sector network ComVoices, shows 75 percent have more work than three years ago, but fewer than 40 percent have more staff.

Only 60 percent were able to offer salary increases in the last three years.

ComVoices chairperson Peter Glensor said the survey's scariest finding was that 6 percent of organisations were facing closure in the short-term.

He said it was an anonymous survey which provided a warning signal that the pressures that were generally through the sector were becoming quite extreme.

Mr Glensor is calling for the Government to address those groups' financial troubles immediately, while also engaging in a debate about its funding models.
