A court has been told how a confrontation between rival chapters of the same gang resulted in the fatal shooting of a man in the Hutt Valley.
Shane Harrison and Dillin Pakai are on trial at the High Court in Wellington for the murder of Alonsio Matalasi in August last year.
They are also accused of discharging a firearm with reckless disregard for the safety of others.
Crown prosecutor Grant Burston told the court today that the accused went looking for a fellow Mongrel Mob member at his Petone flat, and when he wasn't there, took cannabis, cigarettes and a cellphone.
The Crown alleges they later returned to Petone, and on the way Mr Pakai shot at a slow moving bread truck on State Highway 2.
Mr Burston told the court that a confrontation followed, with Alonsio Matalasi being shot and killed by Mr Pakai.
Lawyers for the accused told the court that any actions on their part were self-defence.
Mr Harrison's lawyer Steve Gill said the men were lured to the flats by a fellow gang member they had been searching for earlier. They were confronted by a group of men armed with machetes, Samurai swords and butcher's knives.
Mr Gill said it was fortunate for Mr Harrison that Mr Pakai had a gun so he could fire warning shots to disperse the attackers.
