Teen killed in Auckland crash

9:33 pm on 8 September 2014

Speed may have played a part in a crash in west Auckland this morning which killed a 14-year-old passenger and injured two other teenagers, police say.

Shortly after 6am, a car with three occupants failed to negotiate a right-hand bend and slammed into a power pole on the corner of Yeovil and Taikata roads in Te Atatu.

Ethan Corteze Scott, 14, who was a passenger in the backseat, died at the scene. The driver and another passenger, both 16 years old, received moderate injuries and remain in Auckland Hospital.

The Serious Crash Unit is investigating, and police say the early indications are that speed was a factor, but it may take several weeks to establish exactly what caused the crash. They are also looking to see whether alcohol was also involved.

The crash knocked down the pole causing power cuts to about 1400 properties, and by midday about 300 were still without electricity.
