Crackdown on illegal log burners

7:00 pm on 26 August 2014

Canterbury Regional Council plans to crack down on thousands of homeowners it believes are still using illegal wood burners.

Log burners more than 15 years old are illegal in Christchurch and council principal strategic advisor Nadine Dommisse said inspectors will visit homes this summer to make sure permits are up to date.

"Many people have already made changes, to replace those wood burners with something that is more efficient and cleaner, but there are still some wood burners out there that are being used when they shouldn't be."

Despite the continued use of banned wood burners pollution levels in the city are falling, Ms Dommisse said.

She said the number of times emission levels were exceeded was the lowest recorded at a monitoring station in July.

It showed people are responding to the ban, and she said the summer campaign is about raising further awareness.
