Police in Queensland have questioned and released the occupant of the unit in Surfers Paradise from where Lower Hutt woman Warriena Tagpuno Wright fell to her death on Friday.

Detective Superintendent David Hutchinson of the Queensland police said the man, Gable Tostee, has been questioned and released but would not confirm whether police spoke to him as a witness or a suspect.

Police in Queensland are treating the death as suspicious and have declared a crime scene at the apartment complex.

Mr Hutchinson said Mr Tostee will be interviewed again.

"Look, there's no doubt we will make further approaches to him, but as I say the investigation at the moment is in the evidence gathering and information gathering stage."
