Fire uncovers suspected P-lab

7:20 pm on 14 June 2014

A suspicious fire in a Waikato home has led to the discovery of a suspected P-lab.

Firefighters were called to the Te Kauwhata address just after 7am on Saturday.

When they put the fire out, firefighters saw what they believed was a methamphetamine lab.

The Fire Service's shift manager, Scott Osmond, said because the firefighters were possibly exposed to hazardous chemicals, they had to be decontaminated.

"Because there had been possible exposure to chemicals by our staff, we got our hazardous materials unit up from Hamilton to decontaminate anyone who had been near the scene. There were no injuries as such. Everyone was cleaned up."

He said no one was injured.

The police said the people living at the flat were known to the police but were not there at the time of the fire.
