A former Special Air Service (SAS) corporal has been sentenced to further time in jail for stealing money intended for a charity whilst in the army.
Theodore Laveta Marama, a soldier for more than 30 years, was court martialled in February this year and discharged from the army over charges relating to theft as a servant and for falsifying documents.
He was sentenced to four months in a civilian jail.
He appeared in the Christchurch District Court on Wednesday and was sentenced to a further two months' jail after admitting five more theft charges relating to money which was intended for a charity that supports Canteen - an organisation to help young people living with cancer.
Judge Kevin Glubb told Marama his fraudulent actions, which totalled $8428, were calculated and persistent and had hurt the reputation of the army's youth development trust.
"This was calculated and persistent offending by you, wherein you siphoned off money that was supposed to be going to a group set up to assist youth."
The offending was similar to other thefts Marama was convicted of in 2008, the judge said.
Police prosecutor Bronwen Blackmore said the sentencing judge at the time of Marama's previous offending described it as a calculated, persistent course of dishonest conduct which demonstrated a lack of trustworthiness.
"This defendant finds himself in the same position, with almost identical offending," Ms Blackmore said.
The offending Marama was sentenced for in 2008 involved about $27,000.
