AA says flyover needs changes

11:45 pm on 16 May 2014

An independent panel is deciding whether to approve the 263-metre project, which would run from Buckle Street to the Mount Victoria tunnel.

A member of the AA's Wellington board, Alex Gray, said the flyover would improve traffic flow but the association had safety concerns, including that the cycle lanes were too narrow.

He says in urban environments with walls and barriers, cyclists needed extra space to pass each other.

Mr Gray said another vehicle lane was also needed during peak times.

Opponents of the project, including some local residents, saidthe flyover would hurt the area.
