War memorial wanted for Pacific Anzacs

Families of Pacific Island soldiers who fought in World War I want their names added to the Auckland and Wellington war memorials for next year's centenary commemorations.

More than 450 served with Anzac troops from 1915 in Europe and the Middle East.

The Niuean and Cook Islands communities hold their own Anzac Day services, and this year there were calls for permanent recognition of their soldiers.

National Party list MP Alfred Ngaro said a petition has gone to the Government for a plaque at the National War Memorial Park in Wellington.

He said the aim is to have it in place in time for the centenary commemorations next year.
