Two men have appeared in the Wellington District Court following a shooting at Wellington's Makara Beach early on Monday morning.

A third man - who was shot - is in a serious but stable condition in Wellington Hospital.

The accused pair, aged 34 and 44, have been charged with causing grievous bodily harm.

Neither man entered a plea at Tuesday's remand hearing.

Justice of the Peace Ron Turner remanded both men in custody and granted them interim name suppression.

The two men will appear again on 14 May.
