Easter road toll rising again

9:49 am on 22 April 2014

Four people died on the roads over the Easter holiday weekend, one more than a year ago.

Two of the fatal crashes happened in Auckland, each claiming one life, while two people died in a crash in Opotiki.

The road toll over Easter has been creeping up since 2012, when there were no road deaths. The highest recorded number killed was 21 in 1971.

Acting national manager of road policing Inspector Nic Brown said history showed the country can have holiday weekends with no deaths.

He said police are playing their part in keeping people safe on the roads, but drivers need to play their part too.
