A 39-year-old man shot in the head in Gisborne early on Sunday morning remains in a critical condition in hospital.
Police say the incident happened at a residential property about 2.40am when a man entered a house and shot one of the two occupants.
Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Scott says the circumstances of the incident are unclear.
He says police have searched a number of properties and seized what they believe was the car used to get away from the scene.
A 42-year-old man charged in connection with the incident and will appear in court on Monday.
