Posties try out electric delivery vehicles

New Zealand Post has unveiled two new electric vehicles it's considering using in mail delivery around the country.

The three- and four-wheeled battery-powered vehicles can carry up to 200kg of mail.

New Zealand Post says while mail volumes as a whole continue to fall, people are sending more parcels through the post as online shopping becomes more popular.

The company's mail and communications chief operating officer, Ashley Smout, says the vehicles have been used successfully by postal operators in Europe, including Norway, which has comparable terrain to New Zealand.

Street trials will run for the next few months on delivery routes in Lower Hutt, starting next week.
