Wellington plans to boost cycle projects

Roading plans need to reflect an increase in cyclists, the chair of Wellington City Council's transport committee says.

Figures from the census last year show 3.5 percent of the working population cycle to work, up from 2.1 percent in 2006. At the same time, the number driving cars to work fell by 3 percent.

The council's transport and urban development committee chairperson, Andy Foster, said the figures showed a fundamental change in how people travel.

He said roading plans needed to reflect the possibility of fewer people driving cars, and the council planned to boost funding for cycle projects in coming years.
