Investigations by the police, motorsport bodies and safety officials are under way into the deaths of two men at events during the weekend.

A motorbike rider died on Sunday during the Cliffhanger event at Carterton in Wairarapa, in which competitors take part in time trials up a 6.9 km hill.

Police say the 59-year-old man came off his bike about 2km up, hit a fence and died.

Cliffhanger organising committee member Peter Thompson says police, Worksafe New Zealand, and the committee are investigating.

Another man died during a vintage car event at Hampton Downs in Waikato on Saturday, when the car he was driving hit a wall.

That crash is also being investigated.
