The search for man who disappeared while swimming in the Whanganui River has been called off but will resume on Saturday morning.
Police in Whanganui say they were notified of the 46-year-old's disappearance at Mosquito Point, about 5km from the city, at 2pm on Friday.
They say he jumped off a cliff intending to swim about 50 metres across the river to the opposite bank.
Friends saw him start the swim but then lost sight of him.
