Online alcohol websites criticised

4:08 pm on 6 March 2014

The head of an alcohol safety group says online liquor stores need better security on their websites, to stop underage people shopping on them.

Hamilton resident Gavin Holmes, the father of an underage 16-year-old who bought alcohol illegally online, wants to prosecute the liquor store The Mill.

Mr Holmes says his son was able to buy a bottle of vodka online with his mother's credit card simply by checking a box saying he was aged over 18.

Alcohol Healthwatch director Rebecca Williams says trusting buyers to put in the right birth date is a flimsy form of security.

She says stores need to be able to verify a buyer's age and the people who deliver the alcohol on behalf of the company also need to check.
