Law change a worry for expat Kiwis

An advocacy group for New Zealanders living in Australia is concerned a potential law change there could strip more expatriates of their welfare rights.

The Australian Government is proposing a bill that would treat all New Zealanders equally, regardless of when they obtained their visa.

Changes by the Australian government in 2001 left New Zealanders who obtained an Australian visa after that year not entitled to the grant.

Those who arrived before 2001 are eligible, but now there's concern the proposed law will take that entitlement away.

A spokesperson for the OzKiwi advocacy group Timothy Gassin says if the Australian government wants to treat all New Zealanders equally, it could give them more rights, instead of taking them away.
