Councils' alcohol polices challenged

7:01 am on 2 March 2014

Local Government New Zealand says it is disappointed a large supermarket chain is legally challenging small communities over their alcohol policies.

Progressive Enterprises, which owns the Countdown chain, wants Hauraki District Council to let supermarkets stay open and sell alcohol for an extra two hours - until 11pm instead of the present 9pm closing time.

Progressive Enterprises has indicated it will appeal any decision to keep the current opening hours.

President of Local Government New Zealand Lawrence Yule says he's aware of about six councils facing similar challenges.

Mr Yule says that number will grow as more councils set their alcohol policies.
