Extra support for Canterbury students

1:19 pm on 21 February 2014

Canterbury schools are to get more youth workers and social work services to help students who continue to suffer effects from the region's earthquakes.

The Red Cross's 2011 Earthquake Commission has allocated $2.3 million to fund an extra 33 youth workers in more than 30 intermediate and secondary schools.

There will also be six social workers to help high-need primary and intermediate students.

24-7 YouthWork will provide the services and coordinator Jay Gerald says having more youth workers in schools will make a huge difference, because there has been a noticeable increase in the number of young people needing extra support.
