Christchurch police are trying to stay one step ahead of the university party season this year by getting the organisers of house parties to register their social functions online.
Orientation week starts this weekend and police are keen to avoid scenes from previous years when alcohol-fuelled parties have got out of control and had to be closed down.
Sergeant Steve Jones says by registering their parties, students can be given advice on how to prevent their event from spiralling out of control.
He says that includes not advertising parties on social networking sites and turning down music late at night.
Mr Jones is encouraging party organisers to contact police as soon as uninvited guests arrive to prevent them getting too big in the first place.
