An injured farmer spent eight hours dragging himself for more than a kilometre to find help after crashing his quadbike.

The Taranaki man was riding on his farm at about 2pm on Tuesday when the vehicle rolled on top of him, injuring a leg and shoulder.

The 68-year-old then used sticks to drag himself 1.4km and crossed two rivers before a search and rescue team found him.

Mike Parker is a pilot with the local rescue helicopter and flew the man to hospital. He says that in the past year he has attended three similiar cases and he's urging farmers to have locator beacons on them.
