Whangarei police have thanked three members of the public who stepped in to stop a man bashing a woman on a street, saying their intervention probably saved her life.

Senior Sergeant Dan Cleaver says the couple were arguing at a bus-stop last Friday evening, when the man began assaulting the woman.

Two men and a woman intervened, and the man turned on them, punched them and continued his attack on his girlfriend.

He then took off, but was arrested soon afterwards.

Senior Sergeant Cleaver says the attack on the woman was very violent and is praising the bravery of the three people who stepped in. One of them suffered moderate injuries.

A 20-year-old man has been remanded in custody on an assault charge.
