Contagious bug outbreak hits hospital

7:49 pm on 3 February 2014

An outbreak of the highly contagious stomach bug norovirus has been confirmed at Middlemore Hospital in South Auckland.

The Counties Manukau District Health Board says there has been an increase in gastroenteritis admissions in the last few days and the virus has spread to staff and patients in more than one ward. Eleven patients and three staff members are currently affected.

The health board is asking that people only visit if they are well and have been free of symptoms of any illness for at least two days.

It says those visiting affected wards may be asked to put on gloves and gowns before going in. Visitors should wash their hands well with soap and water before and after visiting Middlemore.

The DHB says bringing children into the hospital during the norovirus alert is not recommended.
