Landfill near state highway rejected

Three councils have turned down resource consent for a landfill near Haywards Hill Road north of Wellington.

Wellington Regional Council and the Hutt and Porirua city councils declined resource consent for Winstone Aggregates to build the dump on a 13-hectare property.

The site off State Highway 58 could have held 1.7 million cubic metres of fill, and up to 259 trucks would have entered and left each day, some during peak traffic.

While the New Zealand Transport Agency approved the proposal, police were concerned it would cause more accidents on the road.

A resident in the area, Jo McCready said she is delighted the dump won't go ahead and hopes the road, which she considers dangerous, can now be made safer.

Winstone Aggregates project manager Dan McGregor said the company has not yet decided whether it will appeal against the decision.
