Water at Auckland's Judges Bay has been given the all-clear after tests on Wednesday showed high levels of bacteria that indicate faecal contamination.
The Auckland Council says water quality is now back to normal, but still doesn't know what caused the enterococci contamination.
It says recent rain washing matter into the bay could have affected the bacteria levels and investigations are continuing.
