A ruptured gas main in Warkworth has been clamped and is safe.
The Fire Service says a digger hit the gas main on Evelyn Street about 4.30pm on Wednesday.
Some businesses on nearby Morrison Drive were asked to shut early as a precaution.
Gas company Vector says contractors have been at the site.
