Govt says TPP deal still worth it

The Government says it should not be a surprise that trying to reach an agreement to create a Pacific-wide trade deal is not easy.

Wikileaks published leaked documents relating to the environmental chapter of the Trans Pacific Partnership, or TPP, on Wednesday night - again highlighting wide differences between the 12 countries involved - including New Zealand.

Finance Minister Bill English said the talks were messy, but he was confident a deal could be done.

"The picture you're seeing is nothing unusual for a trade agreement. It's almost always the case that the hard issues are left till last, and then everyone has to compromise somewhat to get a result, because the overall benefits of this trade agreement would be very significant not just for New Zealand but for the whole Asia Pacific region."

Opponents argue the leaks indicate a weakening of planned environmental protections, and the Government should make all the documents public.

Greens' MP Gareth Hughes said it was absurd the deal did not address critical issues like climate change.

"Kiwis should be worried. There's almost no to very weak enforcement measures to protect the environment, but when it comes to corporate interests and diverse things like copyright to mining there's very strong enforcement, so the environment's coming out second best in this chapter."

Mr Hughes said the Government should release the full text of the deal so people knew what the country was signing up to.
