A search will resume on Tuesday for a man missing after coming out of his kayak near Turihuaua Point, north of Gisborne.
Police say it appears that the man and a woman were about one kilometre 1km out from the beach when they got in to difficulty on Monday.
The man in his mid-20s was reported missing at 4.40pm and was not wearing a lifejacket.
A nearby boat rescued the woman and returned her to shore.
The Eastland Community Rescue helicopter searched the area on Monday, along with an aircraft and surf lifesaving boats from Wainui.
