130-year-old police station being demolished

1:31 pm on 9 January 2014

New Zealand's oldest working police station up until the 2011 earthquakes in Christchurch will be demolished next week.

The 130-year-old Lyttelton Police Station was declared uneconomic to repair following the earthquakes and police have been operating out of a temporary station ever since.

No decision has yet been made on a permanent replacement but consideration is being given to a new building which will also house fire and ambulance services.

Historical items such as archways, stain glass windows and the timber staircase are being retrieved from the old station and may be used in a new building.
