A man accused of a sexually motivated attack on a six-year-old girl in a west Auckland park on New Year's Eve is being kept in custody.
The 20-year-old appeared in the Waitakere District Court on Monday.
The girl was playing with friends at Glendene Reserve when a man grabbed her and carried her away. He ran off when the girl's mother heard her screaming and rushed to her.
The local man has been charged with kidnapping and assaulting the girl with intent to commit sexual violation. He did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody.
The man has been granted name suppression at least until he reappears on 3 February.
The judge said identifying him at this stage would affect the accused and prosecutors gathering evidence.
