A lodge in Whitianga was destroyed by fire on Saturday morning but the Fire Service says everyone got out in time.
The fire at Wentworth Lodge was well ablaze when 11 fire trucks arrived shortly before 3am.
Shift commander Tania Matthews said the two-storey building collapsed, but no one was injured.
She said she would hate to speculate on what might have happened if there were not working smoke alarms in the building.
The cause of the fire is not yet known.
