The Federation of Multicultural Councils says Census figures and a report by the Auditor-General, show a Ministry of Ethnic Affairs is needed to speak up for new migrants.

The number of New Zealanders of Asian, Middle Eastern, Latin American and other ethnicities has grown to nearly 15% of the population, according to last year's Census.

The Auditor-General has said Immigration New Zealand must make better use of available Government resources to help settle new immigrants.

Federation president Tayo Agunlejika said increased government support for ethnic communities is needed to ensure the settlement, integration and participation of immigrants.

He said the Office of Ethnic Affairs should become a ministry.
