Record numbers are turning to online dating over the holiday period, with Cupid at his busiest in New Zealand's major cities.

Online dating website Findsomeone says 264,000 messages were exchanged over the Christmas period - a 60% increase on 2012.

Findsomeone's manager Rick Davies said at this time of year people often reflect on their lives, boosting numbers on the site.

He said the strongest growth has been in the major cities, but people in provincial centres are increasingly moving online.

"Biggest growth is in young people - 18 to 30s - are going online to find love, more than we've ever seen.

"Across the country it really is booming; there is no such thing as a stigma around this any more and we're seeing the site at its highest level in 13 years."

Mr Davies said more than 30% of those who leave the website say they have found someone. He said men appear to prefer blondes, while women prefer men with brown hair.
