Extra funding allocated for cycle trail

The Department of Conservation is providing an extra $800,000 to help ensure a second West Coast cycle trail is completed by March 2015.

The Old Ghost Road trail follows goldmine roads from Lyell in the upper Buller Gorge and down the Mokihinui River to Seddonville.

The department and volunteers have already completed a 60km stretch including an 88 metre swing bridge.

Associate Tourism Minister Chris Tremain says the trail is at the easy end of the scale for anyone tackling it, and will have broad appeal.

It will complement one opened this year between Greymouth and Ross.
