Rest home 'league tables' possible

Aged-care providers say comparing rest-homes for quality will soon become easier.

A programme known internationally as InterRAI is being introduced in aged-care facilities throughout the country.

The Aged Care Association says InterRAI will enable proper comparisons of the quality of care at different facilities.

Its chief executive Martin Taylor says at the moment he could not today provide details, for example, of the average number of infections or falls for a 50-bed rest-home, because that information is not collected.

But Mr Taylor says in two years' time he and others will have that information, and comparisons will be possible.
