The Corrections Department says a prisoner has been taken to Auckland's Middlemore Hospital after attempting to harm himself in a prison van
The van was travelling to Waikeria Prison in the Waikato when it stopped on the southern motorway.
Corrections officials say the man is in a stable condition.
The department says it will look into the incident but is refusing to provide further details about how the prisoner was able to try to harm himself.
It says senior staff are not available to explain what interim measures may be put in place to prevent further incidents.
