Miniature railway shut down

Workplace health and safety regulator WorkSafe New Zealand has closed the Kapiti miniature railway north of Wellington because it is unsafe.

An engineer's report has found significant safety flaws with the Raumati Beach model railway including unstable carriages.

The report follows an incident in September this year when a family tipped out of a train as it rounded a bend and an earlier accident in 2008 when the railway had to close.

WorkSafe New Zealand says since September's accident the operators have failed to properly maintain registration of the railway, which it must have to carry passengers.

The regulator says closing down the attraction at holiday time was not a decision taken lightly, but he could not look a parent in the eye if there was another accident.
