Police closed a road south of Whakatane following a fatal car accident there on Saturday.
They say a car rolled over on Troutbeck Road, Galatea, at 6pm.
The seriously injured driver died while being taken to hospital in a rescue helicopter.
The road was reopened on Saturday evening.
