Cat arrivals swamp SPCA in Auckland

12:13 pm on 20 December 2013

SPCA staff in Auckland are taking cats and kittens home with them or face putting them down as the number of animals being dropped off reaches a crisis.

More than 540 cats and kittens are awaiting adoption at the SPCA in Auckland.

About 100 were brought in to the centre on Thursday alone.

Chief executive Christine Kalin said an adoption fee has been halved for the next three weeks to try to place as many cats as possible into new homes.
