A father who murdered one of his triplets has been jailed for life and will spend a minimum of 17 years in prison.
Thomas Tamatea Ariki-Nui McGregor appeared at the Whanganui District Court on Wednesday morning.
McGregor's daughter Hinekawa died after being taken to Wanganui Hospital in January this year with head injuries. He was arrested in July after medical information was obtained by police.
In a statement, the girl's family said they are taking each day as it comes and are trying to stay strong for the rest of their children.
Detective Sergeant Glenn Troy told Radio New Zealand's Checkpoint programme that the family cooperated with police, although some initially believed McGregor's stories that the injuries were caused by an accident.
"It's been a very emotionally taxing journey for the family of Hinekawa, especially her mother. While the sentencing does provide some form of closure, obviously, the family continues to grieve at Hinekawa's loss."
Mr Troy said McGregor gave a number of explanations for his daughter's fatal injuries, but they were all discredited by expert medical evidence.
