Rescue services say he was riding with friends in the foothills of the Kaimanawa ranges when they saw about eight horses heading to cross the track in front of them.

A horse then knocked the 57-year-old off his bike and stomped on him.

Rescue helicopter pilot Nat Every says the man was in a lot of pain when he arrived and had an open fracture to his femur.

He says to make matters there was a big electrical storm with torrential rain during the rescue.
