Police tight-lipped on school inquiry

7:04 pm on 11 December 2013

Police are releasing very little information as they look into complaints from children at an Auckland primary school. A teacher has been stood down.

The school is understood to be in west Auckland and it is believed that Child, Youth and Family was one of the agencies at a meeting there on Tuesday night.

A police spokesperson will only say that the complaints involve children at the school and the inquiry is in its early stages.

The Ministry of Education is aware the teacher has been stood down, but it is only saying it is supporting the teachers and students.

New Zealand First MP Asenati Lole-Taylor knows the school and says the allegations are either of abuse or neglect.

Ms Lole-Taylor says the school's trustees want the information kept confidential until they and families have decided what to do. She says if it the allegations are true, they are shocking.

Child, Youth and Family says in any investigation involving children, it supports police and the families involved.
