Protests outside Basin Reserve for first cricket test

12:20 pm on 11 December 2013

Protesters have picketed outside the gates of the Basin Reserve in Wellington in opposition to the proposed Basin Reserve flyover.

They handed out leaflets to cricket fans arriving for the test match between New Zealand and the West Indies.

The Save the Basin group says the proposed flyover is an eyesore which won't improve traffic congestion in the capital.

Co-convenor Tim Jones says Wednesday morning's protest was planned to co-incide with the first test match to be held at the ground this year.

Only about 25 people took part in the protest.

Public submissions on the project closed in September and submitters' evidence is due by this Friday.

Those wanting to rebut those submissions have until 21 January.

That timeframe has been criticised by Wellington city councillor, Iona Pannet, and United Future leader Peter Dunne as unreasonably short given this is the summer holiday period.
