A woman died on Thursday morning at a public swimming pool in Wellington.
The incident happened at about 6.45am at the Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre in Kilbirnie.
A Wellington City Council spokesperson said the woman was aqua jogging when other lane swimmers noticed she was struggling, and hauled her out of the water to the pool side.
The woman was unconscious by the time Fire and Ambulance crews arrived. CPR was applied, but she died at the scene.
The pool remains closed until at least midday.
