A petition with about 4000 thousand signatures opposing a new motorway in Auckland has been handed to a Labour MP.

The billion dollar East West Link could go through some residential areas including in East Tamaki, Otara and Mangere, and an Otara school is worried it too is in the path of the proposed motorway.

The Respect Our Community campaign claims all four potential motorway routes will lead to the demolition or removal of hundreds of houses and other community facilities.

Mangere-based chairperson Roger Fowler said people in the area are devastated by the plan and are committed to making sure the motorway does not carve through the community.

The petition was handed to Mangere MP Su'a William Sio on Saturday, to be tabled in Parliament on Tuesday.

Mr Sio said people are becoming more aware of how the motorway plans could affect their community.
